Using Electronic Music Flash Cards
The increase in technology has made many things available that were not even thought of just a few years ago.
I have included some MIDI files of rhythms on the free page of this web. I have used these in conjunction with a software application from Roland called “Visual Music Tutor”. This program was designed as a practice aid for keyboardists however I have found it very useful in band rehearsals.
The VMT will play back MIDI files in tempo with or without an audible click track . You may display as many measures at a time as you want and there are a variety of ways to tinker with the video display, the click, the tempo, and other parameters.
All you need to do is connect a computer to a monitor or TV set and run the MIDI rhythms in class. Have the students count them, play them, tap them, or anything else you find helpful. Students seem to enjoy it (even make a game of it) and get much better at rhythm recognition. Give it a try. Follow this link to learn more about the VMT.
