Music from R.G. Smith Music Engraving & Publishing is intended to be a permanent investment for your music library. Realizing that parts are sometimes lost and that many directors want instructions marked on the music during rehearsal, I have adopted different licensing practices than many publishers.

Larger school districts may be interested in a district wide license (much like a software site license). Find more information on district wide licenses here.

It is said that locks are meant to keep honest people honest. People who will misappropriate someone else’s intellectual work on purpose are not likely to be stopped by copyright laws. On the other hand, fairness to all parties is important. In an effort to adapt to changing technology and both the opportunities and challenges it presents, music from R.G. Smith Music Engraving & Publishing is published with the following copyright restrictions.

  1. All music is licensed to the original purchaser for non-commercial use. The purchaser may produce as many copies of the individual instrument parts as necessary for rehearsal, classroom, or free concert use but may not, under any circumstances, loan, give, or in anyway transfer the music to another party.

  2. Additional scores may be copied for judges use or study, but the original score must be used in performance.

  3. All copies must have the correct copyright notice attached.

  4. Programs for public performance must correctly identify the composer and/or arranger of the music.

  5. All broadcast, commercial public performance, and commercial recording rights must be negotiated separately. No broadcast, commercial performance, or recording right is granted or implied by the original purchase of the music.
