This piece is based on the Hymn “Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted” by Thomas Kelly. The text is a graphic depiction of the crucifixion that moves from despair to glory. The tune, “O mein Jesu, ich muss sterben”, is a rich g minor melody.
The arrangement begins in an octatonic mode and wanders through the phrygian before settling into the g minor. I have tried to make the music follow the text's journey from despair to hope, dark to light.
Piano parts are provided for rehearsal but not necessary for performance and the string parts are doubled by the synthesizer. The piece requires a full symphonic brass section (2 horns rather than 4) and Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, and Bassoon.
